8 of the Most Popular Classic Sushi Rolls

Are you interested in sushi but don’t know where to start? These rolls are considered classic rolls and have stood the test of time, consistently listed as the most popular, commonly available sushi rolls. Presented in no particular order, here are rolls to try if you find yourself looking to try sushi in Meridian Idaho.

Philadelphia Roll

Also called the Philly roll, it is one of the most well-known American and Asian fusion sushi rolls. The two ingredients that are the Philly roll signature are salmon and cream cheese, with the name referencing Philadelphia Cream Cheese. These rolls often also include cucumber.

California Roll

The most famous sushi roll in America, the California roll, usually contains a crab mix, cucumber, and avocado. It is then wrapped uramaki style, meaning the rice is on the outside of the roll, surrounding the seaweed. If you are eating sushi in Eagle Idaho, and it’s your first sushi experience, this is a great first roll to try. You can usually find spicy variants, and the best sushi places will offer iterations of the California roll, such as the Rainbow roll.

Rainbow Roll

Try this if you like the California roll but are feeling adventurous! The Rainbow roll is a California roll topped with thin slices of raw fish, called sashimi. The type of fish changes across the roll, making it look like a rainbow. You might find a combination including yellowtail, tuna, or salmon on top of the rolls.

Dynamite Roll

The Dynamite roll is usually made with seafood, primarily yellowtail, and spicy mayo. You might also find, depending on the chef, green onion, tobiko, and additional spicy ingredients like jalapeno.

Spicy Tuna Roll

Unsurprisingly, the Spicy Tuna roll contains tuna and a spicy sauce, often a mayonnaise-based sauce such as motoyaki. It also usually has a vegetable, such as asparagus, and comes uramaki-style, like the California roll.

Caterpillar Roll

Recipes will vary from chef to chef, but the key ingredients of a caterpillar roll are eel and avocado. The roll has eel, or unagi, inside, and is topped with layers of avocado and eel sauce, giving the roll a caterpillar-like appearance.

Spider Roll

The main ingredient of the Spider roll is soft shell crab. It can be topped with an eel sauce or spicy mayo sauce, depending on the restaurant, and often comes with avocado.

Shrimp Tempura

As the name suggests, this roll usually offers jumbo shrimp that has been fried in tempura batter. There may be other add-ons, such as avocado or cucumber.
